Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a doctor’s referral to get an ultrasound?
No, you do not need a referral from any general practitioner to get an ultrasound, as 3D/4D ultrasounds are performed as a voluntary request, and does not replace any investigative or scheduled medical/diagnostic scans requested by your doctor.
Are there any ultrasounds Medicare does not cover?
The Medicare Benefits Scheme lists several types of ultrasounds which it does not cover. These include ultrasound items 55036 and 55037, unless a morphological assessment of the abdomen has been performed beforehand. Some elective pregnancy ultrasounds are also not covered. In these three cases, we are unable to bulk-bill for the cost of these ultrasounds. Chat to us beforehand to ensure that the type of ultrasound you need is covered, and therefore we can bulk-bill it.
What about ultrasounds with an ‘R’ symbol?
Some ultrasound services are marked with an ‘R’ symbol by the Medical Benefits Scheme and are only eligible for a Medicare benefit if they’re performed under professional supervision. This is not a problem for WSMI, as we professionally conduct all ultrasounds by fully trained and accredited medical technicians.
